As a parent, your primary duty is to raise your child to be happy and healthy for the long years they have ahead. This calls for a wide range of lessons, including instilling good oral hygiene habits. When your children are taught early, they are more likely to continue healthy habits into adulthood.

This starts with brushing your son or daughter’s teeth as soon as they emerge from the gums. This is usually the front two bottom teeth but soon others will emerge. As their manual dexterity continues to develop, you can provide them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a child-safe toothpaste that have been approved by the American Dental Association. Once they are done playing at brushing, you can finish the job with a quick brush.

Daily flossing is also important for maintaining good gum health and instilling future habits. Sometimes flossing a child’s mouth can prove to be challenging for large adult hands. You might want to try spooling dental floss around your pinky fingers or using a small floss stick. When they’re ready, you can let your child use the floss stick with waxed floss.

Their regular dental checkup at Oak Park Dental is also important for maintaining their oral health. This is a good opportunity to get them excited about going to the dental office, so try to make it an upbeat experience for them.
