If you feel like you haven’t been getting enough sleep you might be dealing with a disorder known as sleep apnea. If you suffer from sleep apnea you will experience disrupted sleep and may even wake up during the night because of interrupted breathing patterns. Sleep apnea needs to be treated as soon as possible, as it can lead to severe health problems.

Some people have a family history of sleep apnea. However, it is also associated with age, gender, weight, large tonsils, or a large tongue. If you have a deviated septum, allergies and sinus problems, you may also be at a risk for sleep apnea.

The two common types of sleep apnea are obstructive sleep apnea, in which your airway becomes blocked during sleep; and central sleep apnea, which occurs when brain signals are blocked from reaching your chest muscles. Sleep apnea can lead to severe health problems including diabetes, depression, irregular heartbeats, strokes, high blood pressure and even heart attacks. It can be treated by adjusting sleeping habits, visiting your dentist for an oral appliance or CPAP device, or through surgery.
